Sixteen-year-old Lily Buden just made history on the open ocean! In her first-ever Molokaʻi 2 Oʻahu (M2O) wingfoil crossing, Lily claimed the top spot in the Women’s division with a blazing time of 2:08:03—just 48 hours after winning the Maui to Molokaʻi (M2M) race. Her back-to-back victories capped off a three-part race series that began with Paddle Imua, showcasing not only her physical endurance but also her strategic mindset. Representing the west side of Maui, Lily’s performance across all three downwind races solidified her as a rising force in the world of wingfoiling. Continue reading for an inside look into Lily’s mindset, training, and quiver choices!
1.Huge congrats, Lily! How does it feel to take home wins at IMUA, M2M, and M2O? What does this accomplishment mean to you personally?
“When i set out to compete in these three races, i was hoping to beat my times from the races i competed in the year prior as well as having good results. When it came to M2O i was really determined to challenge myself to honestly make it to the finish without falling and possibly having light wind at the finish line leading me to paddle into the finish. The outcome of each race was a major accomplishment and goal for me and i couldn’t be more happy and grateful with my results.”
2. Each of these races presents its own challenges, how did you adapt your strategy across IMUA, M2M, and M2O?Was there a specific moment in any of the races where you really had to dig deep to hold your lead?
“Knowing that the Paddle IMUA was a much shorter race than the other two, i knew that this would be a great race to really test my racing capabilities and help me prepare even more for M2M and M2O. I knew that the Paddle IMUA would provide me with really windy conditions so i knew that i would be able to fly down the coast as fast and powered up as possible to aim for the perfect line. For M2M I was determined to beat my time from the previous year and try to have the best line as possible. I was able to accomplish both of these goals. For M2O my main strategy was being able to have the perfect line when it comes to maneuvering through the giant swell and navigating my way through the tough current and wind conditions.”
3. With back-to-back races, how did you prepare and recover between events to stay sharp and strong?
“The preparation between each of these races involved a lot of water, stretching, a massage, and rest so i could preform at my best for each race.”
4. Talking gear, what was your setup for the triple win, and how did you choose that board, foil, and wing for the conditions?
“For each race I stuck with my 4’4 36L F-One board so i had enough volume to get up in light winds. For the foil, since the conditions were windier for the IMUA i used my 530 Escape foil which really allowed me to gain as much speed as possible. For the other 2 races, i knew my main challenge would be the light winds so i decided to go on a bigger foil the SK8 650. This foil really allows me to still gain tons of speed and also have the ease of more pump throughout light winds. As far as wings go, I used my 5.5 Strike Aluula for the races which i felt was a good decision. This wing is super light, strong, and easy to maneuver throughout all of the swell in the channels. I could have definitely used a bit bigger of a wing for M2O but since my other competitors were on 6.0m or above. But, I was able to make it work with the 5.5!”

5. Did you make any gear adjustments or switch setups between races to better suit the course or wind conditions?
“The only gear adjustments i made were with my foil. Since the conditions were windier for IMUA, i used a smaller foil and since the conditions were lighter for M2M and M2O, i used a bigger foil.”
6. What role did your training and experience in Hawai‘i play in giving you an edge during these high-stakes races?
“Living on the westside of Maui, i definitely felt much more comfortable with the M2M race since i have trained in that channel a lot throughout the past few months preparing for these races. Not having any experience with M2O especially since I haven’t even foiled on Oahu before, this definitely created much more stress not knowing the best route to take.”
7. What have these wins taught you about yourself as a competitor and as a waterwoman?
“Growing up i have always been a very competitive person which has brought out a lot of pressure for these races not knowing how I would preform. However, the most important thing to me is having fun and being able to have the feeling of freedom throughout these races. Being involved in water sports has really brought me closer with the ocean so i know that i am always safe and confident during the races.”
8. Looking ahead, what’s next for you? Any new goals or races you’re excited to take on after this massive milestone?
“The possibility of competing in these races next year as well as beating my times from this year. I also want to improve as much as possible and be very prepared for the races to come. But as of right now i’m definitely taking a little rest after the eventful weekend of racing!”
