Chris MacDonald Doubling Down for the Win

This week, American rider Christopher MacDonald claimed the GWA Big Air Wingfoil World Championships Gran Canaria 2024. In close competition, the F-One rider produced one of the most thrilling finals in GWA Wingfoil World Tour history, winning his first Big Air title, by unleashing the first ever double back flip in competition.

“The men’s Big Air final guaranteed a showdown of the moment’s top riders, MacDonald, Malo Guénolé (FRA), Bastien Escofet (FRA) and Benjamin May (GER). There was going to be a new champion as 2023 winner, Julien Rattotti (FRA), was eliminated in the semi-finals.

MacDonald uncorked a Double Back-flip in his first attempt and followed it by another, and another, earning a 9.77 on his way to a 19.24 combined score. This was a trick he had been practicing at his home in Hood River, Oregon, and the one he was saving for the finals.”

It’s impressive how much the level has changed since last year,” said MacDonald. “After the first double, I knew I could do it and things were easier after that.”

The double backflip secured the winning seat, standing as the first ever in competition. This now stands as MacDonald’s second world title, following the 2023 Surf Freestyle victory.

Super stoked to win the Big Air title and get my second championship. I am looking forward to try and claim my third in the upcoming Fuerteventura freestyle event! A huge thank you to my family and friends at F-One, and back at home in Hood River!” – CM
