“Ahh, the mountains – majestic and formidable, their beauty both captivating and at the same time treacherous. Every year, at Thompson Pass near Valdez, we gather to celebrate a unique snowkiting festival. It’s a place where action meets the raw power of nature, and this year, two F-ONE ambassadors made the journey, recalling the exhilaration and challenges they’ve come to expect. This festival is more than just an event; it’s an incredible experience that pushes our limits and fuels our passion.

The Alaska Kite Festival, which began about 20 years ago on a large lake, has found a breathtaking home in Thompson Pass, nestled in the snow-draped peaks of the Chugach Mountains near Valdez. This pass, known for its stunning vistas and challenging terrain, lies at an elevation of 2,800 feet and provides direct access to several prominent glaciers like the Worthington Glacier and the Valdez Glacier. Thompson Pass offers expansive views of these and other nearby glaciers, creating a spectacular backdrop for the festival and making it an ideal setting for kiting amidst the rugged landscapes typical of the Alaskan wilderness.” – VR

The Journey to Thompson Pass

The drive from Anchorage to Thompson Pass is a gateway into Alaska’s natural grandeur. This six-hour scenic journey along the Glenn Highway offers expansive views of dense forests and majestic mountain ranges, setting an adventurous tone for the festival.

Event Highlights

At this year’s festival, the Bandit kites were prominently featured, chosen for their ability to manage the diverse and challenging wind conditions of Thompson Pass. Both Victor and Steve favored these kites for their superior control and stability. Steve particularly appreciated the visibility benefits of the kites’ vibrant colors during low visibility, noting, “The bright orange of the Bandit kites acted as a beacon, guiding us back to each other in the whiteouts.”

Technique & Equipment

Advanced kiting techniques were essential for navigating the steep inclines of Thompson Pass. “Making slow and steady progress up 20–40-degree slopes was achieved by looping or performing figure eights with the kite,” explained Steve. On days with winds up to 30 mph, the Bandit proved indispensable, offering necessary power and stability during blizzard gusts. The Diablo V5 kites also played a critical role, especially on lighter wind days, complementing the capabilities of the Bandits.

Twenty years ago, Victor Ruotti made a significant leap from the tropical climate of Paraguay to the cold winters of Wisconsin. This marked the beginning of his yearly pilgrimage to Alaska, where he joins the kite festival at Thompson Pass. Victor’s journey symbolizes a quest for adventure and a passion for snowkiting, which has seen him transition from tropical breezes to the crisp Arctic air. Each year, his return to Alaska is a vivid reminder of his commitment to pursuing his passion from one extreme to another.

Festival Extras

During periods of calmer winds, the festival included paragliding and speed wing clinics, instructed by Scott Amy and other experts. These sessions offered attendees the chance to engage in other aerial sports. Victor’s first solo paragliding flight was a highlight.  “The views were absolutely stunning, making that flight one of my most memorable experiences,” Victor remarked.

As this year’s Alaska Kite Festival wrapped up, the stories from Steve, Victor, and other participants underscored its lasting appeal. The festival has evolved from its modest beginnings to a vibrant celebration of adventure, community, and the enduring spirit of the Alaskan wilderness. Thompson Pass, with its access to glaciers and expansive landscapes, continues to be a perfect host for this remarkable event. A huge thank you to Victor and Steve for the insights & recap!
