Moona Whyte does it again! Only a few days after becoming the Wingfoil Wave World Champion and winning the GWA Wingfoil World Tour leg in Dakhla, Moona was once more untouchable, this time in the kite-surf competition.
Feeling right at home on the Moroccan right-handers, she was in a league of her own during the whole event, racking up points and charging throughout the day. She earned two of the three highest scores of the whole competition, men and women combined, notably scoring a massive 18.43 in the semi-final with a wave receiving 9.50.
“It was so much fun out there,” she said after the final. “The waves were firing and the wind was strong. Super-long rides. It’s crazy to win both disciplines. I can’t really believe it happened. I’m so happy right now. Honestly, I was focused on the kite event more than the wingfoil.”
This is Moona’s third win on the 2023 GKA Kite-Surf World Tour after taking first in Cape Verde and Brazil earlier this season.
On the men’s side, Matt Maxwell also had a fantastic day. Although used to riding lefts on his homespot in Cape Town, he adjusted really well to the conditions in Dakhla and quickly moved through the heats. Staying focused and consistent, he made it to his first semi-final on the tour. Despite earning his highest score of the day (15.13), he unfortunately lost that heat by only 0.67 points, and ultimately finished fourth overall.
Congratulations to Moona and Matt for their performances in Dakhla!
